Deadline for Gay Games registration is this month

by Bill Podojil

The deadline for registering for participation in Gay Games IV is rapidly approaching. December 31 is the last day athletes and cultural participants can enter this historical event, scheduled to take place in New York City.

During the week of June 19, 1994, an expected 15,000 athletes from more than 300 teams around the world will be participating in the many sporting events. In addition, more than 5,000 artists will participate in the Games Cultural Festival, running concurrently with the athletic events. A staggering 500,000 spectators will be cramming into the Big Apple for the Games. (The National Park Service claims their estimate to be about 200.)

It promises to be a week of sport, culture, pride and celebration and will culminate with Stonewall 25, the event planned to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. This civil uprising is regarded as the spark that ignited the modern struggle for gay rights. During this event, a rainbow flag, planned to be the longest flag in the world, will be carried by hundreds of gay men and women down the parade route.

The Gay Games were established as an international sporting and cultural event emphasizing inclusion and participation over competition. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their age, gender, skill level or sexual orientation. Embodying the spirit of the original Olympic Games, Gay Games IV and Cultural Festival stresses the individual achieving his or her personal best.

In order to make this event a success, Gay
